If your cat goes missing, its chances of being safely reunited with you depend on it having some form of identification, the most effective being micro chipping.
Collars are better than nothing, but can work loose and fall off.
Micro chipping involves inserting a tiny chip (about the size of a grain of rice) under the skin between the shoulder blades, which can be done by any vet. The chip contains a unique number, which is recorded on a national database. If the animal gets lost, it's number can be read, and it can be reunited with its owner. Vets and animal welfare organisations have scanners which can read the number from the chip, it's record on the database can be found, and the owner traced. Your cat could be home within hours.
