Behaviour

The majority of the behaviours common with cats are controlled by their instincts, which are pre-programmed into them.  These instincts can be divided into three main areas:-

· Hunting – cats are natural predators and have the natural instinct to hunt and catch birds and other small animals.  They may also bring you “presents” although these may not always be welcomed by you.

· Mating – An unneutered male cat may seek out female cats on heat.

· Territory – Cats have the instinct to establish and maintain a territory. Cats’ social structures are very hieracical In areas where there are a number of resident cats, one will become established as “top cat”

Kneading

Kneading is behaviour pattern which is commonly exhibited by cats.

This is where a cat uses its front  paws to knead at a cushion, pillow, bed etc, (or sometimes the owner).

This behaviour stems right back to when the cat was a kitten when the kitten kneads at its mother’s chest to stimulate the production of milk.
